10 Stylish Ways to Wear Knee-High Boots

I’ve always been a believer in the power of accessories to make an outfit look and feel complete. And that goes double for boots.

Not only are the best boots functional for cooler weather, but they’re “front and center” in giving your look a finishing touch.

Fall and winter clothes call for cozier accessories, so I’ve rounded up some stylish knee-high boot outfits to inspire you.

1. Colors

Boots come in pretty much every color of the rainbow, not to mention all the fun animal prints. But if you’re looking for a super versatile pair that you can wear with almost any outfit, I’d suggest starting with brown or black.

Once you have a few neutral pairs in your closet, you can have fun looking for boots in bright, statement-making colors and prints.

Styling Tip…

You should totally try a full monochromatic look. I love wearing black from head to toe and pairing it with some black boots.

You can tie a leather jacket around your waist to add some shape and a cool, effortless vibe. Your outfit doesn’t have to be black, though.

It can be any color you want, depending on how much of a statement you want to make. You can always break up the single-color look by throwing on a jacket or coat in a different shade.

2. Suede Or Leather

Honestly, choosing between leather and suede really just boils down to your personal preference. But, I do have a few things you might want to consider.

Suede is a softer material that’s better at stretching and molding to your foot. This makes suede boots so much more comfortable for wearing over long periods.

Because of that, I usually think suede is a better pick for daytime. Leather, on the other hand, often has a bit of an edgier feel that seems more fitting for a night out.

Styling Tip…

Before you wear them for the first time, make sure to protect your suede boots with a suede protective spray. Using a product that is made specifically for suede will be a huge help in preventing water and stain damage. Trust me on this one!

3. Heel Height

Knee-high boots offer a whole range of heel shapes and heights. You’ll see everything from totally flat styles and medium platforms to sky-high heels.

When you’re trying to figure out what to wear, here’s a little rule I live by. Flat soles and lower heels are my go-to for more casual outfits.

Boots with a flat or a chunky heel are also a much smarter choice when I know I’ll be on my feet all day.

A higher heel will give you that extra lift and instantly make your outfit feel less casual and more dressed up. It’s totally fine to rock knee-high boots with tall heels during the day, but I find that nighttime is usually the perfect moment for them, especially for a more formal evening.

Beyond that, the heel choice is really all about your personal style. Of course, the taller the heel, the trickier they are to walk in.

Styling Tip…

For most of us, the sweet spot for a comfortable heel is somewhere between 1.2 and 3.5 inches. Anything higher than that offers very little support for your foot, which can definitely lead to some aches after a long day.

4. With Leggings

Leggings are a total wardrobe essential that I’m pretty sure every woman has in her closet. This is amazing because leggings and boots are a match made in heaven.

Another fantastic thing is that an outfit with tall boots and leggings is so easy to dress up or down.

You can pair them with flat boots for a comfy but still stylish look for coffee runs or a day full of errands. Or, you could wear them with a heeled boot and a dressier top for lunch with friends or a day of shopping.

Styling Tip…

To balance out the tighter fit of your leggings, try wearing an oversized sweater or coat on top.

5. With A Mini Skirt

Most people probably don’t think of a mini skirt as a go-to for a winter outfit. But pairing a skirt with boots lets you show off those amazing boots while also giving you some coverage that will help keep you warm on those colder days.

Styling Tip…

Mini skirts are perfect for creating those transitional fall outfits. I’d pair a mini skirt with a cozy sweater, or for winter, finish the look with a long coat.

6. Pair Boots With A Long Coat

The trench coat, which is another one of those timeless winter essentials, looks absolutely incredible with a pair of boots.

It doesn’t matter if you wear your coat open to show off your cute outfit underneath or belted, the boot and trench coat combo is a classic for a reason.

It’s simple, it’s timeless, and it’s always so sophisticated.

Styling Tip…

Cinching thicker wool coats at the waist is a great way to create a flattering hourglass shape.

7. With Jeans

The Cool Hour

Right now, the trend is all about pairing looser, straight-fit or mom jeans with knee-high boots for a cool retro look. However, I have to say that skinny jeans really are the best for this.

The reason is simple: the less fabric you have to tuck into the top of your boots, the better and cleaner the look will be.

Styling Tip…

Wearing a pair of high-rise skinny jeans with your boots will make your legs look incredibly long. You can pull the whole outfit together by adding a crisp white shirt or a chic blazer.

8. With Shorts

Knee-high boots paired with shorts is a look that works all year, but I think it’s an especially great transition outfit for fall.

You can add a pair of black tights and then finish off the whole look with an oversized blazer or a long, cozy cardigan. Slouchy boots also look so good with shorts and other outfits that have shorter hemlines.

Styling Tip…

Try wearing a nude-colored boot with a block heel to really elongate your legs.

9. Under Long Skirts

Pairing high-heeled boots with a long or midi-length skirt can totally elevate your whole look. This is a perfect time to keep your outfit a bit more low-key or understated and just let your boots be the star of the show.

I find that snake or croc print boots look stunning with a solid-colored skirt. Plus, if you live somewhere with tough winter weather, a tall pair of boots gives you an extra layer of warmth.

Styling Tip…

A high-cut slit in a maxi skirt is not only super sexy, but it also makes moving around so much easier. And bonus, you get to show off whatever gorgeous boots you’re wearing!

10. With A Sweater Dress

A sweater dress and knee-high boots are a classic fall and winter combination that I just adore. It’s such a simple way to look chic and put-together while staying incredibly cozy.

You can play with different lengths and fits, from a chunky, oversized sweater dress to a more fitted style. This is one of those fool-proof outfits that always works.

Styling Tip…

I love wearing a solid color dress and letting my boots be the main statement piece of the outfit.
