Chic Ways to Style a Baggy Sweater

One of the easiest ways to create outfits that look and feel put-together is to start with a statement piece. For those days that can fluctuate between “a little chilly” and warm, an oversized sweater is the perfect layer.

Today I’m sharing some easy outfit ideas that feel effortlessly styled.

1. Jeans

Oversized sweaters can sometimes make you feel a bit larger than you are. However, my go-to trick is tucking the sweater into a pair of long jeans and adding some pointed-toe heels to make my legs look a mile long.

This little tip helps bring balance to the entire outfit.

When you’re out shopping for a new baggy sweater, try to find ones that hit right around your hip. I find this length gives the best fit and makes them super easy to tuck in without adding extra bulk.

Skinny jeans are an amazing choice because they really offset the volume of the sweater. Another great option for sweater length is a slightly cropped style.

A shorter cut makes it even simpler to tuck into your pants, which is perfect if you’re wearing a tighter-fitting pair.

By the way, I think Hannah over at cocobeautea has the best style when it comes to styling baggy sweaters. Her page is totally worth checking out if you’re looking for more inspo.

2. Leggings

If you’re aiming for a look that covers your waist and backside, just leave your sweater untucked.

I love pairing it with some faux leather leggings and cool sneakers for an outfit that feels comfortable and has that effortlessly chic vibe. It’s the perfect uniform for running errands or grabbing coffee.

3. Sweater Dress

A maxi-length sweater dress is such a great piece. It can keep you so warm and make you look instantly ready for a cold-weather party. A dress with a high-leg slit is always a fun touch and it really helps keep the silhouette from feeling frumpy.

A great pair of heels will add some height, and some pretty accessories are perfect for adding a little glam. A short sweater dress is another cold-weather essential. I’d pair it with some lug-sole boots to ground the shorter hemline for a balanced look.

4. Skirts

Again, I find it’s almost always a good idea to style a baggy sweater with a more fitted bottom. Shorter skirts do this job so well.

Also, when it gets a bit chillier, a pair of tall knee-high boots or some sheer tights can add that extra layer of warmth while looking super chic.

Looking elegant in an oversized sweater is absolutely possible if you build the rest of your outfit thoughtfully.

A midi skirt with a high slit paired with some pointed-toe heels creates such a long, beautiful silhouette. And of course, some elegant accessories will elevate any look from simple to stunning.

6. For Work

A knit sweater half-tucked into a great pair of high-waisted trousers has a look that feels both ready for work and so feminine.

To make sure this outfit stays on the professional side, I think it’s probably a good idea to stick with neutral colors and maybe skip any bold patterns.

7. Sporty

A pair of cool, non-gym sneakers, like the hightop Converse you see in the photo, and a wool duster coat can instantly take an outfit from frumpy to cool. A baggy sweater is also such a perfect piece to just throw on before and after you hit the gym.

It looks both sporty and cute, and the fitted leggings or shorts underneath create a nice balance with the bigger sweater on top.
